Ichiban Karate as a Club
Ichiban karate is one of the fastest growing and inclusive karate clubs in Leeds, growing both in terms of numbers and in terms of success at a competitive level at competitions around the UK.
Based at Ichiban Dojo on Meanwood Road, Ichiban Karate also facilitates classes in Gipton in conjunction with the charity Gipton Together. The majority of the club’s members are from Little London, Woodhouse and Gipton.
The club provides karate classes for everyone age 4 + and provides members with the option to simply either progress their karate in class or also pursue a competitive aspect through the development of a strong competition squad over the last 5 years.
Approximately 60% of the club is made up of family and sibling members that train and progress together on a weekly basis. The club is also proud to have a strong female membership in sport that is often seen as male dominated.
The club is primarily run as a labour of love by brother and sister team, Kylie and Kieron Greeff, who offer over 11 hours of classes a week as well as both also holding down full-time jobs. Both Kieron and Kylie have over 20 years karate experience each and have both competed and achieved medals at World Championship level as juniors. They’re passionate about spreading their love for karate as well as helping young karateka reach the highest levels and also experience the many different experience and opportunities karate, and competitive sport in general offers.
Our Story So Far
The club started at the Dance Studio in Mabgate Mills in 2017, with just 2 junior students attending the first class and only a handful of adults, all of which were friends or family of Kylie and Kieron. Since then, the club has moved to Ichiban Dojo and now has over 120 regularly training students.
The club is part of Dokan Karate Association and affiliated to the World Union of Karate-do Federations (WUKF).
Having had a strong competitive background themselves, both Kyile and Kieron were keen to develop and grow a competitive squad and culture in the club.

Over the past 4.5 years the squad has continued to grow and prior to Covid was competing at approximately 10 external competitions a year, achieving medals in every competition entered including the English Karate Federation Nation Championships and often despite it’s relatively small squad in comparison to others, finished as one of the top 10 clubs.
The competition squad have now set their sights on the 10th WUKF World Championships, in Fort Lauderdale Florida, in June 2022.

The club and squad members have returned to training following Covid restrictions with a renewed vigour and hunger for competition and improvement. With the recent announcement that the 2022 World Championships would be going ahead, the squad have now begun training towards this prestigious event in June 2022.
There are approximately 15 eligible karateka that have begun their training towards the event, with the average age of the squad being 11. The squad’s youngest eligible athlete is just 7.
The Championships will be attended by karate federations from around the World and will also receive significant media and press attention. The more recent Romanian Championships, although said to be much reduced in terms of size due to ongoing Covid restrictions, had more than 1300 athletes compete from 39 countries.
Stepping into international competitions doesn’t come cheap however, and with flights and accommodation alone likely to cost over £850 per person, attending the World Championships will simply not be achievable without sponsorship support.
Attending the championships will not only provide a rare opportunity for these young athletes to travel abroad and compete, the ability for each of them to add the experience and achievement to their CV’s, can have significant and long lasting- impact on their lives but also significantly improve and broaden their future higher education opportunities.

Without sponsorship, none of the eligible, talented young karateka form the club will be able to attend, as they will simply be unable to afford it.
Every Pound raised will go towards getting these athletes to and from the Championships in June and highlight the karate talent and excellence of these children from Leeds.
It is estimated that the total cost for each athlete to attend the Championships will be approximately £1,650.
