Day Three – Cadets - Vets Kumite and Kobudo Action

Today our cadets to vets took to the mats for open weight kumite and team kumite, with Lewis also representing in the Veterans short and long weapons kobudo divisions.

We knew today would be a tough one – with some categories reaching 60–70 competitors, staying focused during four-hour-long divisions is no easy feat. Add to that the challenges of being ‘smaller’ athletes in open weight categories, and it really was a test of mental and physical resilience.

The day began at full pace, and we only managed to make it to most fights as coaches thanks to our brilliant ‘technical team’ in the box, keeping us updated with radio calls and schedule changes – thank you for keeping us on track!

Elijah was outstanding in his 14–15 boys’ open weight division of 70 fighters – narrowly missing out on the medal rounds after a strong start and losing to an excellent American athlete who later took bronze.

Ahmed also had a solid showing, putting in a great effort before being knocked out by the eventual winner – an impressive fighter from Canada.

Lewis competed in Veterans Kobudo, showing precision and control with both short and long weapons. New to the discipline, he faced a very experienced field – including one competitor reportedly a 6th Dan in Kobudo – and still narrowly missed out on a podium finish, placing 4th and 5th in his divisions. A fantastic effort in a highly technical event.

The highlight of the day was the 16–17 boys team kumite. Through three tough rounds, the team secured a well-earned bronze medal. A standout moment came from Adel, who went into the final fight of the quarter-finals needing 6 points and an ippon to secure the win – and he delivered just that with calm under pressure!

Tonight, the team rests up ahead of tomorrow’s cadet and adult weighted kumite categories and children’s kobudo.

A huge thank you to all our supporters, both here and back home. The cheering and encouragement really do lift our athletes and make a huge difference 💪👏
